The season is finally over for me, and I have mixed feelings about that as of right now.
After my last win, I went on a string of average finishes and continued to maintain my Rookie of the year
status. Then with only 4 nights left in the regular season, I blew my motor up, and things looked pretty
bleak to get it fixed in a hurry.
Luckily, my good friends Todd and Allen Cooney offered me their backup engine for the rest of the
season. I really have to say, that saved me a ton of work and money at a time in the season where things
were tight money wise, so I really appreciate their help. I only missed the season championship race at
the Fairgrounds, and the rest of the season was pretty non eventful with another DNF and some other
problems in qualifying.
With our new business I really had very little time to work on the car so I guess my finishes showed my
lack of focus and maintenance. In fact, we loaded the car up after Friday night’s races and never
unloaded it until we got to the track at Webster City the next night, because I had to be open at 8:30 till 4:
00 on Saturdays, which left no time for me to work on the car.
All in all, I was happy with how the season went. In 28 nights of racing, I won the IMCA Late Model
National Rookie of the Year, 3 feature wins, 11 top fives, and gained the respect of the other competitors
in the Late Model class. I would have liked to win a few more features, but before the season started I
expected I might win 1 feature on a fluke where all the fast guys broke, so I should feel pretty fortunate
that I was able to win 3 and contend for several others.
I’m not sure where, what, or how much I’m going to race next year, but one thing’s for sure, it’s going to
be a long fall and winter, and luckily there is always football!!!!!!!
