The start to the 09 season was a rough one but once everything shook out it turned out to be one of the
best starts to a season in my career.
We went first time out to the Texas motor speedway and ran against THE toughest field of modifieds I
have ever seen. The car was surprisingly good for just out of the box, I missed the feature by 2 spots in
my last chance race but I would call the “maiden voyage” a success anyway.
Next we went to Beatrice for the Spring Nationals, I qualified the first night and had trouble in the feature
and ended up not finishing. The next 2 nights I pulled bad starting spots and wasn’t able to transfer to
the mains. I was struggling to get a handle on the car over the next couple weeks and failed to qualify for
the frost buster at Marshalltown, the next night was the Boone frost buster and I lead all but the last 3
laps after a later restart where the track changed and I made a couple mistakes that cost me a win, I still
salvaged a 4th.
Things finally meshed with me and the car on week 2 at Marshalltown where I won my first race of the
year. After that, things started to come together, I had a strong run at Boone the next night from mid pack
to 3rd until a late race stack up cost me 3 spots and I ended up 6th.
The next week at Marshalltown we got the heats in and I was lined up in the 5th row when the rain came
during the preceding feature. We went to Webster City the next night and I had a good run going, I lead
the first half of the race and the car was not that good and Mark Elliott found a faster line and got by me
for the win, I settled for 2nd.
Next week at Marshalltown with double features on the card, I was excited for the slick track and the
confidence I had going. I worked my way up to 4th and passed for 3rd but got edged at the line. The
second feature I started 5th row and worked my way through there and got the lead on a restart with 4
laps to go and cruised to my 2nd win.
The next night at Webster City I started 2nd row and took the lead early on and found a different line and
pulled away for my 3rd win of the year.
We went up to the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta on Wednesday and on a super sticky track I raced side by
side for 2nd with a good friend of mine Jeremy Mills through most of the feature. On a restart I got
squeezed in the wall and got a flat tire.
Rain washed out the races at Marshalltown and the next night at Webster City we got the heats in and it
rained out. We went back up to Alta the next Wednesday and I lead the first half of the feature and broke
a camshaft for another DNF. It rained out that Friday and we had double features at Webster City Saturday
night, I took the lead on lap 3 and cruised to my 4th win of the year in the makeup feature. The 2nd
feature I started 5th row and with the features only going 15 laps I was only able to work up to 3rd. We
decided to go back up to Alta one more time and see if we could get a win, well, at least a finish. I won my
heat and started on the pole for the feature, The car was not good at all and I figured as long as I kept it
in the clean part of the track I would be able to hold everyone off. I was wrong, 3 guys drove by me like I
was painted on the fence and I finished 4th.
I have a lot of confidence going forward through the rest of the season so hopefully I can keep the car
together and continue racking up feature wins.
