Well things are starting to look up for our racing team finally. Since the last blown motor we have
finished every race and logged some much needed laps to try to get the ball rolling again.
Three weeks ago was a complete washout with rainouts almost everywhere in Iowa.
Two weeks ago I got to race at The Iowa State Fair Speedway on Friday night and I recorded my first
heat win of the year. That lined me up on the front row, since my point average was as low as humanly
possible. After leading the first part of the race The track kept getting rougher as we went and my car
just did not like running through the holes and I kept getting shot up the track and allowed a car by
me. After fighting through more holes I caught back up only to get tangled up and spin. That lined me
up on the tail for a restart with only 3-4 laps remaining and I was able to make it back to 7th. Not what I
had hoped for, but at least I was able to see the checkered flag in the first feature of the year.
Next it was off to the Hamilton County Speedway. After starting on the second row, I jumped right into
second and was contending for the lead at the start of the feature. But as the race wore on, I realized
there were problems with the setup on the car. Something was not right and I was not sure what but I
kept fading backward, finally finishing in 7th place again. Once again not what I hade hoped but, it
was another finish and I learned more about the car and what needed to be done to make it faster.
After thinking about the problems we had on the car that weekend we realized some major changes
needed to be made to the chassis, so after discussing it with the crew and our R & D department we
made the changes to the chassis and rescaled the car for the next weeks races, which at this point
we were so far out of the points race that we had decided to switch and go to the Marshalltown
Speedway which has been prepared much better than the Fairgrounds at Des Moines. But
Marshalltown rained out so we were off to the Iowa State Fair Speedway again.
This week started off very good too and the car was considerably faster. I lined up on the front row
again for the feature and took off to a big lead for the first 4 laps until I lost a rocker arm on the
engine so that put me down a cylinder and short on power, especially for as sticky as the track was. 9
or 10 laps went by and I was still pulling away despite the engine problem, but after a restart with
about 4 to go I hooked another rut and put me up slightly into the wall, which allowed 3 cars past. I
was able to get back by one of them coming down for the checkered flag which scored me in 3rd. I
was extremely disappointed because the car was so fast and I should have been able to win, but I
messed up and they took advantage. But another finish and more laps to learn from.
The next night at the Hamilton County Speedway we got heats in and it rained out before we could
get any features in, so we will have double features next weekend.
